Advanced Materials Research Laboratory

The Advanced Materials Research Laboratory is led by Dr Andrew Wright and has expertise in the area of thin films and their characterisation.

Thin film materials are used in many areas of technology, particularly semiconductors in microelectronics but also for hard coatings (engineering), optical coatings (anti-reflection) and new novel areas such as self-cleaning glass.

The group works in the nanotechnology field and develops carbon nanotubes as thin film structures using chemical vapour deposition (CVD).

This research has led to a better understanding of the interaction between the catalyst and the wafer support and how wetting is important in facilitating facile nanotube growth.

Our expertise in carbon nanotube structures has led to interest from a local company, ESI Technology Ltd, who are now funding our work.

Recent projects, funded under the Welsh Assembly Government’s Knowledge Exploitation Fund (KEF PPOC), have led to the development of novel sterilisation and adhesive technologies.

Further details of the AMRL, its activities and facilities can be found on the website of Dr. Andrew C. Wright.
