Management student support

Students within the Management subject area enter the programmes at various levels with a variety of qualifications and experience.

We aim to provide the necessary support to help you succeed on the programme and progress in your chosen career. The small tutorial groups provide lively discussions and the opportunity for us to know all our students individually. The friendly atmosphere and the ‘open door’ policy make it possible for the students to gain help and advice on a regular basis.

“Student support is an integral part of what the management subject area does,” said Senior Lecturer Jan Green. “We do develop a fairly close relationship with our students because of the tutorials we provide as an integral part of the course, and we have year tutors so there’s a contact point for students.”

Online learning

Moodle is a virtual learning environment which provides an online 24-hour service for students. It is used extensively within the Management subject area to provide information on a range of programmes.

All Glyndŵr University business students can access programme information including programme announcements, programme documents by subject, assessment details and feedback every day, seven days a week.

Glyndŵr University offers all of its students access to computer facilities including direct internet access. The University also ensures the internet is available to all students staying in accommodation on campus.

With Moodle online students get access to their tutors and their fellow students direct. In addition to programme material, this software package allows students to set up their own virtual class or chat room so they can discuss any specific programme issues they have with their colleagues or tutors.

All students are given their own email address so they can send and access messages and programme material while at home in the UK or overseas.

Personal Development Planning

Personal Development Planning is embedded within all of the wide range of programmes the Management subject area delivers. All students are provided with the opportunity to meet with a tutor to discuss their own personal, academic and career-related development.

On the full-time programmes and some of the part-time programmes, personal development planning is integrated within dedicated academic and personal development modules.

Many of the students on the postgraduate and professional part-time programmes are in full-time employment where continuing professional development will be encouraged within their own organisation or professional body.

The professional programmes already include this element as a compulsory addition to the professional award. Personal development planning at Glyndŵr University is designed to complement the existing professional framework the students may be using to progress their own academic and career aspirations for lifelong learning.

Principal Lecturer of Operations Sandra King has been leading work to support students in the development of their online e-portfolios via the Mahara programme on Moodle.

Lifelong learning

Our business programmes are designed to be flexible and cater for the needs of students at different times in their lives.
Many students need to earn money whilst studying to develop their skills and improve their employability.

The full-time programmes are flexible and specifically designed to enable students to have free days to study or have part-time jobs. This can be particularly useful for adults returning to education who also have busy lives.

Our part-time programmes cater for students who are working full time and need to progress their career opportunities. Most work on a one afternoon, one evening basis, to suit most businesses and families.

Subject routes are available through our programmes with students joining to undertake a foundation degree, progressing to an honours degree and continuing to masters level.

The content of our programmes has been carefully planned so that students may use their qualifications to gain exemptions from some of the professional body requirements. Not surprisingly, over 90% of our students obtain suitable employment within the first year of leaving us.

In today’s business world it is essential to keep up to date with current management thinking, changes in legislation or customer satisfaction services. We offer a series of short programmes for the business community, providing opportunities to acquire professional, managerial and business knowledge.
