These degrees are ideal if you are interested in working with children, young people and families in both formal and informal education settings.
The courses are a combination of academic study and work experience. Informal and formal educational elements are included, such as the Foundation Phase/Stage and the National Curriculum and factors impacting upon learning and teaching.
They offer an alternative route into teaching, while keeping options open for other career opportunities that involve work with children, young people and families.
The courses aim to produce graduates who are critically informed about and engaged with contemporary issues relating to education, children/young people and their well-being.
The courses will develop various transferable skills, which will prepare you for employment in a range of sectors.

You must have GCSE English or Welsh (grade C or above) and (i) 240 points at A Level or (ii) one of the following qualifications or equivalent: BTEC Diploma in Early Years (Merit), CACHE Diploma in Child Care and Education (240 points), NVQ (Level 3) related to working with children, BTEC Health Studies (Merit), Access Diploma to Higher Education, GNVQ/AVCE Health and Social Care (240 points). Experience of working with children and families is also expected. See information on general entry requirements.
Before you are offered an unconditional place on these degrees you will be required to complete a Criminal Records Bureau form and pay the appropriate fee, so that a check can be made on your suitability for working with children and/or vulnerable adults.

BA (Hons) Families and Childhood Studies
The community, children and families are at the heart of this course. With academic study and work experience in a variety of community-based settings, you will gain an excellent understanding of issues relating to children, young people and families and their holistic development.
This degree has a multi-agency approach, and includes investigation into the changing dynamics within childhood, families and communities.
This course covers all the important aspects of working with children and families, including government legislation and how it affects provision. It investigates issues of health, welfare and the development of the child, family and society and you will develop various transferable skills, which will prepare you for employment in a range of sectors.

FdA Early Childhood, Care and Education
The FdA Early Childhood, Care and Education is a general foundation degree aimed at increasing practitioners knowledge of children from birth to eight years of age. The course has a strong focus on Early Years and Key stage 1. The course is taught jointly by Yale College and Glyndŵr University.
This foundation degree is aimed at practitioners who are in employment but wish to study for a degree whilst working. It aims to bring together the practical knowledge and skills of experienced practitioners with up to date academic study in the field.
This degree is designed for people working with children in the 3 to 8 age range. If you have an interest in developing your professionalism in working with children and families this course will develop expertise for delivering the Early Years Foundation Phase and the Early Years Foundation Stage. The course also takes a ‘holistic’ approach to the child exploring many of the issues relevant to children and their families today, including child development and inclusive practice, ICT in early years and the role of play.

This is a highly topical area of study as current policy and legislation is leading demand for experts in this field. The aim of the foundation degree is to develop you as a specialist in the care and education of children in the 3 to 8 age range. Completion of the foundation degree would also allow you to progress on to the final level of an honours degree.

Entry requirements and applying
A relevant early years qualification at level 3, plus at least a couple of years' work experience with early years or key stage one children. You must be working in an early years setting (paid or voluntary) for at least 150 hours per year and have the agreement of the setting to support you through your degree. From 2012 our general academic requirement for an honours degree will be 240 UCAS points, and for a foundation degree 120 UCAS points. If you do not have the points required your application will still be considered. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and with a range of experiences.

Teacher training
Following the successful completion of your degree (normally with a higher classification) there are opportunities, through an additional year of study, to progress to teaching.
This could be:
primary (PGCE) at a range of other universities; or
further education (PCET) at Glyndŵr University
providing you have GCSE grade C or above in English, Mathematics and double Science on application.
