How will I study?
This course offers you the two things that employers look for in potential trainee journalists – extensive practical work experience and the chance to acquire a full set of National Council for the Training of Journalists qualifications.
You will spend two days a week on placement with leading regional newspaper titles in North Wales or Chester under the supervision of an experienced journalist. In addition you will study at Glyndŵr University one day a week working towards your NCTJ qualifications.
What scholarships do you offer?
The Journalism Diversity Fund is available to support the training of journalists from ethnically and socially diverse backgrounds without the financial means to attend National Council for the Training of Journalists training courses. The fund is managed and administered on behalf of the industry by the NCTJ. Details are available at www.journalismdiversityfund.co.uk
How will I be assessed?
You will sit the full set of NCTJ exams and assessment leading to the NCTJ’s preliminary qualification in journalism. In addition your work will be assessed through a portfolio of your work covering the areas of study – news writing and reporting, media law, public affairs and the technical skills needed for video and online journalism. You will also have regular review sessions with your tutor and work placement supervisor.
Accolades
Almost two thirds of the students on the 2009/10 programme went on to take up jobs as trainee reporters. In addition the 09/10 students achieved an almost 90% pass rate in National Council for the Training of Journalists exams in law, public affairs and news writing and gathering.

Meet the tutor
Janet Jones is an experienced journalist who joined Glyndŵr University from the Express & Star, the UK’s largest regional newspaper, where she was a lecturer at the company’s journalism school after a career in reporting, news editing and sub-editing.
She works closely with the National Council for the Training of Journalists and is chief examiner and chairman of the NCTJ public affairs examining board.
