Good quality housing is vital to the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities.

Your study of housing will address the following questions: How is housing provided within the UK? What can we learn from other countries? How can we help people obtain housing? What’s involved in developing new housing and improving existing housing?

The courses bring together elements of sociology, economics, politics, law, business management, finance and design and development. It will also help you to develop a range of work-related skills including team work, communication, presentation, project management, organisation, critical thinking, strategic awareness, self reflection, analysis and problem solving.

The courses incorporate a range of opportunities for students to develop their transferable skills. These include: group working, presentation and report writing skills. The course also encourages students to engage in reflective practice.

  • The BSc (Hons) Housing Studies is a top-up degree course, students can progress from the FdSc directly to the BSc honours degree
  • There is a strong emphasis on work based learning. Students are encouraged to apply their academic studies to practice situations
  • The tutors have close links with industry and professional bodies and the courses have been developed in consultation with employers
  • A variety of teaching and learning methods are used including site visits, “real-life” case studies and group work  All students enrolling on housing courses will become student members of the Chartered Institute of Housing
  • The FdSc Housing Studies is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) and incorporates the requirements of APEX. Consequently all students who complete the course successfully will be eligible to apply for full professional membership of the CIH

Assessment

Assessment for the course includes portfolios, simulated work place tasks such as reports, briefing papers, client advice and presentation of materials. There are also seminars and team activities.

Course content

BSc (Hons) Housing Studies

You will develop your inter-professional skills, learn how to project manage successfully and appreciate the interrelationship between housing and sustainable
regeneration. You will also be able to choose options from a range of modules such as mentoring for housing practice and building appraisal. You will produce a dissertation on an area of interest to you giving you an opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge of an aspect of housing which can relate to, and inform the needs of your organisation.

FdSc Housing and Sustainable Communities Studies

The programme has been developed to meet the needs of practitioners who are working in a role associated with the management and delivery of affordable housing and sustainable community development. The roles are likely to be broad and may include neighbourhood managers, housing management officers, housing advice workers, homelessness officers, tenant involvement officers and housing strategists and housing enablers.

FdSc Supported Housing

The programme has been developed to meet the needs of practitioners who provide housing related support for vulnerable people. Their respective roles may be operational or strategic, commissioning or contractual, and be located within the public, private or voluntary sector. The primary objective of the programme is to provide learners with knowledge of the context within which housing and support has been planned developed and delivered in order that they can reflect on and analyse how this impacts on supported housing practice generally and their role specifically.

FdSc Regeneration and Sustainability

The programme has been developed to meet the needs of practitioners who are involved within the physical development of land, buildings and associated infrastructure.

The primary objective of the programme is to ensure that practitioners have the knowledge, skills and attitudes to set physical aspects of regeneration within economic and social regeneration, social and economic inclusion, prosperity, education, housing, health, community development and the environment.

From 2012 our general academic requirement for an honours degree will be 240 UCAS points, and for a foundation degree 120 UCAS points. If you do not have the points required your application will still be considered. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and with a range of experiences.
