Computer systems and networks link people and businesses on a global scale. Business and industry is dependent on diverse network technologies, and there is high demand for professionals to design and manage efficient networked systems.
This is a technology-infused course that includes a mix of technology, security and networking modules with many hands-on opportunities. There is an emphasis on the installation, operation, security, and maintenance of computer systems and networks used in business and industry.
The course will equip you with the essential skills not only to be able to design and implement systems, but also manage them effectively and ensure that the people using them benefit from their full potential. You will learn how to manage, design, implement, configure, and operate secure networks on a professional footing and how to identify a range of significant threats to network security and formulate and implement defence strategies and mechanisms.

Course content
BSc (Hons) Computer Network Management and Security
You will learn how to work within commercial constraints. You will also develop transferable skills such as the ability to manage your own learning and personal and professional development; communicate effectively using a variety of communication methods; present and interpret numerical calculations appropriately; effective information retrieval skills (including the use of browsers, search engines, and online library catalogues); deploy IT facilities effectively and efficiently; to work independently and as part of a team with minimum guidance.
Typical course content
You will work on the design, installation and support of LANs (local-area networks), WANs (wide-area networks), internet and intranet systems. You will learn to provide day-to-day on site administrative support for software users in a variety of work environments, maintain network hardware and software, analyse problems, monitor networks, gather data to identify customer needs and then identify, interpret and evaluate system and network requirements.

Assessment
Assessment is seen as an integral part of learning and assessment criteria are linked to individual module learning outcomes. Assessment methods include practical assessments, reports and essays, analysis of case studies, oral presentations, seminar papers, project work, Personal Development Portfolio, examinations and unseen class tests. Assessment will involve both individual and group / team-based assignments.

Entry requirements and applying
The general requirement for the honours degree is 240 UCAS points at A level or equivalent. In addition applicants must have five GCSE passes at grades A, B or C including Mathematics and English. See information on general entry requirements.
