Year 1
Broadcasting and Journalism
Ground Floor Journalism (HUM 412)
Here students get started on understanding the world of journalism. Practical workshop sessions will help you explore and develop news gathering and writing skills across different media platforms guided by experienced journalists.
Research Methods for Journalists and Broadcasters (HUM 409)
This module uses applied practice to explore research methods for a range of media communication environments to gain a practical understanding of the processes and pressures of a live media research environment.
Media Communications
Language Rhetoric and Communication (HUM 473)
Students will examine communication and semiotic theory through language and rhetoric analysing the ways in which media texts persuade and control readers, audiences and viewers. The module also considers the social and cultural dimensions of media communications.
Broadcasting and Presentation Skills (HUM475)
By focusing on key skills for personal presentation and projection, students explore the essential communication and personal competencies required for media communications and public relations. Practical activities include the use of video, radio and presentations.
Year 2
Broadcasting and Journalism
Multi Media Journalism (HUM 513)
Students will continue to develop their journalistic skills of news gathering and production and apply them across a range of media platforms. Sessions include the chance to set up an on-line news site as well as learn new skills in video journalism and developing user-generated content under the guidance of experienced multi-media journalists.
The Commissioning Process (HUM 550)
This module provides each student with an awareness of the entrepreneurial and creative skills needed to operate as a media practitioner- either freelance or employed - in a challenging and competitive set of industries.
The Media Business (HUM 551)
Here students are offered a deep insight into the workings and bureaucracies of the media industries on a local, national and international scale. Students develop their own professional CV with a view to work-placements and post-graduate scholarships within the media.
Media Communications
Integrated Media Communications (HUM 514)
Students have the chance to get hands-on experience in the communication industry in a collaborative project with a real-world client. The fully integrated multi-media project puts their creative, communication and organisational skills to the test.
Professional Contexts (HUM 515)
Every professional communicator needs to know the basics of media law and the ethical and regulatory framework controlling the industry. This module gives students an introduction to media law, the evolving law of privacy and the industry’s professional framework.
Year 3
Broadcasting and Journalism
Applied Broadcasting Practice (HUM 609)
Students will develop an advanced understanding of writing and creating content for online, television and radio including working on Glyndŵr TV and other “live” projects. The module will develop advanced specialisation and give practical experience of television and radio broadcasting alongside interactive and online media at a professional level.
Media Law (HUM 609)
This module concentrates on the detail of media law exploring the restrictions and regulations controlling the reporting of the criminal justice system as well as the strict impartiality rules of broadcasting compliance.
Media Communications
Media Project and Portfolio (HUM 677)
Students will create a final portfolio for presentation within the media discipline of their choice. Students’ projects have included the organisation, publicity and promotion of the university student summer ball, creative direction and publicity of a live stage production and a Google ad-words campaign for a real client.
Case Study (HUM 676)
This module provides the opportunity to develop an independent critical and analysis-based action research into a case study of one specialist media practice. It promotes the application and development of independent research and investigation at an advanced level.
