Our animal studies foundation degree will ensure that you are prepared to give animals the best treatment possible.

There is a growing demand for highly-qualified, skilled specialists. We will introduce you to life in the animal care industry, and the current issues and debates surrounding animals and welfare.

FdSc Animal Studies

The topics covered will equip you with a range of specialist knowledge and practical skills.

The ‘zoological science’ module will enable you to develop laboratory skills. Studying ‘ethics and animal welfare’ will enable you to evaluate animal related issues and procedures. Learn how to manage animal collections and design enclosures in ‘captive animal husbandry’. Study animal behaviour and how humans interact with animals.

Knowledge of animal health, diets, how animals learn and training methods are essential if you ae looking to work in animal care so we’ll introduce you to these too.

Our FdSc Animal Studies course will help you to gain the skills required by employers in a rapidly developing and competitive industry. All of your subject-specific learning will be supplemented with your acquisition of teamworking, time management and critical evaluation skills as you progress through the degree.

Career opportunities

Career opportunities in the animal care industry are wide-ranging. You could be working in animal welfare organisations, conservation, zoos and wildlife parks, veterinary practices, animal feed companies and veterinary or pharmaceutical companies. Further study opportunities are also available, such as progression to the final year of a related honours degree. This could lead to a career in education or research.

Assessment

The course comprises a range of modules that are assessed by theoretical and in some cases practical coursework. For some modules end of module examinations are also set.

Entry requirements and applying

120 point from A/AS level, National Diploma or equivalent (max of 60 points obtained fromn AS levels). An animal-related qualification, such as National Diploma in Animal Management or Science related A2 qualifications are particularly welcomed. In addititon 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (including Science, English and Mathematics) or equivalent. Applications are welcomed from candidates who do not possess the standard qualifications but who can demonstrate their capacity to pursue the course successfully. Entrance is dependent on an assessment of past experience, a successful interview, references and diagnostic assessment to determine suitability for the course. Enthusiasm and commitment are essential.

A foundation degree or equivalent in animal studies or a closely related subject.

From 2012 our general academic requirement for an honours degree will be 240 UCAS points, and for a foundation degree 120 UCAS points. If you do not have the points required your application will still be considered. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and with a range of experiences.
