Immigration Guidance
If you are already enrolled as a student at Glyndŵr University, please sign into your Moodle account for relevant immigration support.
If you are a national of a country outside of the EEA and wish to study in the UK, you must apply for entry clearance. If this is granted, you will have special permission from the UK government to enter and remain in this country as a 'Tier 4 immigrant' whilst you study. Tier 4 is the section of the immigration system that deals with student visas. The rules around this can be confusing, so you may want to read through the 'frequently asked questions' section at the bottom of this page. Alternatively, you can email immigration@glyndwr.ac.uk
Making a visa application
Even if you are applying to the university through one of our recruitment consultants (who will be able to advise you on the visa application process) it is useful to have an idea of what is required to successfully obtain a Tier 4 (General) Student Visa.
You will need to download and complete the visa application form, which can be found on the UK Border Agency website
Tier 4 is a Points Based System (PBS). To be awarded a student visa, you will need to score 40 points.
- 30 points are awarded for having a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from a UK Tier 4 Sponsor. Glyndŵr University is a Highly Trusted Sponsor, which allows us to offer courses that are restricted in other institutes; our sponsor licence number is AGA39FYY8.
A CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is a database record held on an online system between the university and the Home Office. It contains information about you and the course that you will be studying, and is identified by a unique reference number. We will give you a copy of the information that we enter onto the online system as well as the reference number, so that you can complete your application form.
- 10 points are awarded for proving that you have enough funds to support yourself financially whilst in the UK. This is also known as the 'maintenance requirement'.
Financial Requirements
As an international student you will not have access to most state benefits (known as public funds), therefore you must prove to the UK Border Agency that you have enough money for your time in the UK. When we assign your CAS, we will state how much of your tuition fees you have already paid. If you have not paid in full, you must show that you have the funds to do so, plus the cost of general living expenses such as food and travel. As a prospective Glyndŵr University international student you are required to show a minimum of £600 per month for up to 9 months, totalling £5,400, for your general living expenses.
You can show funds available to you by using an account in your name. You may also use funds held in an account by your parent or legal guardian, but you will have to prove the relationship between you and them, and also have a letter from them granting permission to use these funds for the purpose of your overseas study in the UK. Similarly if you are being sponsored by an organisation or your government, you will need to show evidence of this.
The evidence must show that the funds have been held for a consecutive 28 day period, ending no more than one month before the date of the entry clearance application. It can take several weeks before a decision on your application is reached; we highly recommend that you submit your application as early as possible, but by no more than three (3) months before the start date of your course.
We also recommend that you keep photocopies of all documents submitted to the UK Border Agency, including your application form and passport.
Biometric data collection
You will have to provide biometric information. This is quick and easy; your fingerprints will be taken and you will be photographed. Once you have submitted your visa application, you will be informed of how to make this step.
Tuberculosis screening
Nationals from some countries are required to be examined for Infectious Tuberculosis (TB) before applying for entry clearance. To see if this applies to you, check with the Embassy in your country or visit the UK Border Agency webpage about tuberculosis screening
ATAS Clearance
If you are studying at Masters Level or above you may need to apply for an ATAS certificate.
The Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate is issued by the UK Government. Typically it is subject to academic areas such as Maths, Science and Technology. Your conditional offer letter from Glyndŵr University will inform you whether or not you need to apply for the certificate. For more information and how to apply, please visit the website for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
Be aware – it can take several weeks to obtain ATAS clearance so make sure you start the process as soon as possible.
