The Glyndŵr University Experience

Majid Shakeel - Pakistan

I study BEng (Hons) Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering. Glyndŵr University is affordable but also rewarding in terms of a quality education and I’ve had a lot of help and support. All of the university staff are very welcoming and supportive. Another attraction for me in coming here was the high-quality, free accommodation which reduced my living expenses a lot. Overall, I think I made the right decision studying at Glyndŵr University.

Faizan Ali – Pakistan

I decided to study my Masters degree in Glyndŵr University and so now am here doing MSc Management. Choosing a university can be very difficult and exhausting at the same time. We have a lot of options to choose from and eventually we have to choose the best. Glyndŵr University has been nothing but the best for me. I first got to know about the university through one of the education counselor’s presentations in Pakistan. One of the attractive things for me was the choice of scholarship packages and having free accommodation. Then I was won over by its vibrant student life and its ability to perfectly balance the work-play pressure; thereby being a favorite with the students.

Wrexham itself is a very lively town with a lot of amazing hangout places for students, such as restaurants, cafes and bars/pubs in its town center, in addition to some of the best places to visit and explore in the surrounding countryside. One can never seem to get enough of the place even after spending a whole year here. I settled into student life in the UK quickly and describe the opportunity to study at Glyndŵr as ‘a dream comes true’ and will describe the UK education system as the ‘best in the world’.

I am studying the MSc Management course; in my opinion, management is the backbone of any business and the ability to ‘manage’ people is an essential characteristic one must possess. It is all shaping my character for the bigger and more competitive world outside student life. The course is practical and focuses on the skills required in the work environment. A lot of emphasis is placed on group work and time management, which are both so important in real-life situations. The course is also helping me to refine my research skills and making me able to carry out critical analysis of articles. This helps me to become a multi-tasker and analyze my own strengths and weaknesses.

Lectures take place in well-designed and well-equipped 'smart-classrooms' which have a seating capacity of up to 180 students. They are supplemented by weekly tutorials where 25-30 students discuss and submit assignments for formal assessment and get support for the lectures. In my first year at University, I stayed in Snowdon Hall and it was perhaps the best welcome I could have asked for! Imagine living with almost 200 new people from various backgrounds; the excitement and the adrenaline rush just keeps one craving for new things all the time. It was definitely a good experience as I learned how to be independent in all walks of life including living independently; doing laundry, cooking, etc. It is an experience which in my opinion is a must for every student.

I am really impressed with the level of support offered to international students when they arrive in Wrexham. The faculty members are very friendly and the down to earth and courteous student representatives and Student Ambassadors are a big help too; they have been in that situation themselves and can tell you what to expect. The staff in the International Office are really cooperative and can help new comers settle in quickly, helping them open a bank account and lots of other things. The Careers Centre was great for helping to find work to fit around my studies.

I was selected as student representative and I believe that International students should be given a bit of help with the problems they face as they settle down to study. Glyndŵr University has many different cultures and nationalities studying here but it is important to make everyone feel comfortable. Acting as a bridge of communication between the faculty and students truly polished my skills and has given me more confidence. I don't know what the future has in store for me at the moment but I can confidently say that the education I received at the university has definitely shaped me up as a confident human being, capable of tackling any obstacle in life.
