Glyndŵr University signs prestigious agreement with Welsh harpist

Glyndŵr University has put pen to paper on a unique new collaboration with Wales’ international harpist Catrin Finch.

Ms Finch, who has been awarded a year-long fellowship by the university, will visit Wrexham six times between now and July 2009 to lead a series of public concerts and workshops for young harpists.

She will also visit several schools in the Wrexham area to work with students on music projects and developing budding harpists’ skills.

Speaking after signing the Robarts Fellowship agreement with Ms Finch, Professor Michael Scott, Vice-Chancellor of Glyndŵr University, said: “We’re delighted that Catrin has accepted the fellowship. Catrin is one of the most prominent classical musicians of her generation and the agreement we’ve signed is an exciting one which will bring tremendous benefit to young people throughout Wrexham.

“Glyndŵr University is dedicated to involving the community in its day-to-day activities and Catrin’s visits to both the University and local schools will continue this commitment.”

After playing harp for the first time at age five, Ceredigion-born Ms Finch has risen to become one of the world’s leading harpists. She picked up her first international prize in 1999 - winning the prestigious Lily Laskine International Harp Competition in France - and has since received a Classical Brit Award nomination and held the post of Royal Harpist to the Prince of Wales.

Professor Scott extended his thanks to Glyndŵr University Governor Aldham Robarts, who provided financial support for the new fellowship.

Professor Scott said: “Aldie has been a fantastic and loyal supporter of the University since he was appointed to the Board of Governors five years ago. We’re eternally gratefully that he’s provided us with such a great opportunity to enter into a new partnership which will benefit everyone with an interest in both Wrexham and Glyndŵr University.”
