Innovation in teaching at NEWI

18 June 2007

This month NEWI has been celebrating the success of its Post-Compulsory Education and Training degree students.

The 92 second year students were asked to design displays which illustrated their innovative ideas on methods used to teach. The displays which were spread throughout the NEWI William Aston Hall, Nick Whitehead Theatre and Gallery 103 at NEWI involved students who were studying the course at NEWI as well as students from Yale College, Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology and Deeside College where the course is offered on behalf of NEWI.

The students had to judge each others ideas and decide upon the most innovative idea that would win the Geoff Petty award. Geoff Petty is thought of as one of the most engaging thinkers in education and he is a best selling author on teacher training methods.

The students choose Paul Guest, who has been studying the course at Deeside College as the winner of the award. His display was based on a sculpture of a man and bike made out of copper pipes which he had used to help get pupils gain practical skills. He was presented with a signed copy Geoff Petty’s latest book, entitled ‘Evidence-based Teaching’ by Daryll Griffiths who is Programme Leader of the Post-Compulsory Education and Training degree at NEWI.
