Something different for theatre and performance students

NEWI Theatre and Performance students have been working with visiting theatre company Volcano Theatre.

The students took part in the company’s recent production ‘Reasons to be Silent’ on its visit to Mold.

The production was not your average theatre performance. It didn’t take place in the theatre but in a house.

Theatre goers were transported from Clwyd Theatre Cymru to the secret location and were given a torch to explore the house experience the production.

The Volcano Theatre who contacted Theatre and Performance lecturers at NEWI to ask if students would get involved in the production also held a workshop for students in Wrexham at NEWI’s Terry Hands studios.

Gavin Baker, Theatre and Performance lecturer said: "It has been a great experience for the students.  The Volcano Theatre Company is highly renowned and they are a very exciting company to work with.

"Their approach to performance is innovative and completely different to traditional theatre and this has exposed the students to something totally different and given them a different perspective."

The workshop, delivered by Fern Smith, looked at the notion of thinking outside of a conventional theatre.  Students explored the senses, visualisation and how to see to see things from different perspectives.
