Prize draw takes a surprise track

Surprise was in the air last week at NEWI as Scientriffic prize draw winner, Tara Morris was presented with her prize – a £150 Track Sport voucher which can be used for a track day or drifting day at any of their 6 circuits.

Thousands of people visited the NEWI campus for Wrexham Science and Technology Week. The week which ran on the NEWI campus from 20th to 25th March and covered talks, demonstrations and exhibitions on a range of science related. The competition could be entered by anyone visiting Scientriffic on Saturday 25th March and the winner was drawn at the last meeting of the Wrexham Science and Technology Week Committee before Easter by Chairperson Helen James.

Tara Morris was invited to NEWI to receive her prize last week. She was delighted to win “I never win anything” she said. “I’d forgotten all about the competition. I really enjoyed the day; there was so much to see and I loved visiting everything. I seem to be getting a lot of good news at the moment” she added “I’ve just found out that I’m pregnant.”

This wasn’t the only surprise for Helen James though, as she soon discovered that Tara was in fact a NEWI Forensic Science student. “I was delighted when I saw that I’d drawn a female winner of the Track Day, so it was an extra surprise when I discovered it had also been a student. What it does prove though is how popular the day was with people of all ages and science interests. Scientriffic brings together two important issues at NEWI - the importance of Science and NEWI’s role not only as a place of study but also as a resource to its community.”

Tara who is in the first year of her degree will take a year out of studying to have her baby but says that she is already making plans for her return. “I’m loving my course; so much is covered and there are all sorts of career possibilities from it. The lecturers have been really supportive about my news; I will certainly be contacting NEWI’s crèche the following year as I’m dedicated to finishing my degree. But I may have to hold off taking my track day for a bit!”
