Local artists stick together
23 June 2006
A group of local artists consisting almost entirely of graduates from NEWI’s North Wales School of Art and Design have been out and about getting their artwork noticed as a group called Red Shed.
Started by Jill Lunsford, a local ceramic artist, in 2004 the group have since been busy with regular meetings to network and discuss opportunities available to them as a group and as individuals. Jill had the idea for the group after organising an exhibition of art work created by her and her fellow graduates in Llangollen International Pavilion. The exhibition was a success and she realised that there were huge advantages to working together as a group whilst also each pursuing their own separate goals and careers. Jill believed that by forming a group they would all benefit and would actually have more impact as individual artists because of the power of the group as a combined force.
Judith Alexander has been a member of Red Shed since it was formed she said: ‘Red Shed has been a valuable group for many of us, after graduating it can be very isolating as an artist. Members meet up once a month to discuss new work and find new opportunities for exhibitions. Red Shed has such a wide range of art work on offer which has enabled us to offer the public an interesting and varied mixture of art work for exhibitions.’
Red Shed, which is made up of artists from a wide variety of fine art disciplines from including Ceramics, Glass, Wood, Jewellery and Metalwork have most recently been exhibiting at the Oriel Corwen and the Cheshire Show. Alex Walker who has been manning the Red Shed stand said ”the Cheshire Show has been a great experience, and a fantastic opportunity to sell to the public and meet other exhibitors!”
For anyone interested in viewing the groups work their next exhibition will be at the Castle Park Art Centre, Frodsham, Cheshire between October and December 06.
