Free film showing at NEWI - Solomon & Gaenor

19 January 2006

Next Wednesday (25 January) NEWI will be showing the award winning film, Solomon and Gaenor.
This certificate 15 film is billed as Wales's answer to Romeo & Juliet and is in the medium of Welsh with English subtitles. It won two Welsh Baftas; Best Costume and Best Film in 2001 and was nominated for an Oscar in 2000.

It tells the story of a young Jew (Ioan Gruffudd) in 1911 Wales trying to make his living by selling fabrics door to door, but to do so he must hide his nationality. On one of his sales he meets and falls in love with a demure young woman (Nia Roberts) with a strong-willed father (William Thomas) and a Jew-hating brother (Mark Lewis Jones). The two fall in love and she becomes pregnant, but only then does she learn of his ethnic background. When anti-Jewish riots break out, the two are forced to flee and become separated.
The film will be shown at 7.30pm on Wednesday 25th January in NEWI’s Nick Whitehead Theatre. After the film there will also be the chance to quiz the director in a question-and-answer session. Admission is free but people are asked to telephone Emma Bennett on 01978 293473 or e-mail e.bennett@newi.ac.uk to reserve their place.
