Be a student for the day

6 June 2006

NEWI is setting people a challenge this month - to be a student for a day. No it’s not a Big Brother task and doesn’t involve dressing up but it is guaranteed to change people’s perceptions of what university life is like.

The two events on Wednesday 14 June and Tuesday 11 July are aimed at people who would like to progress their studies to university level but have either been put off by their own concerns or haven’t had the opportunity in the past. The day-long sessions which run from 10am until 3pm will offer people the opportunity to taste student life for the day, examine the benefits of going to university and answer any questions or concerns they may have.

Wendy Bates who has organised the events believes they can be a real turning point in people’s lives. “University can be a daunting step especially when faced with the many issues to consider before a final decision is made” she said. “People often ask questions about entry qualifications, financial concerns and the ability to cope with a higher education course and these events address these fears as well as giving people an opportunity to try out university life for themselves.”
