A close shave for nursing student

16 August 2006

NEWI’s nursing students turned to hair dressing last week to help their fellow student raise money for charity.

NEWI nursing student, Karen Lea from Llangynog volunteered to have her head shaved to raise money for the Leukaemia charity, The Antony Nolan Trust. She has been raising money for this charity since 2000 and this was her latest bid to increase the money she can raise.

The Anthony Nolan Trust provides lifesaving donors for patients in need of a bone marrow transplant. Since 1974 they have helped to give over 4,000 children and adults a new chance of life.

Her fellow students were all in awe at the bravery of her shaving her head with many of them admitting that they couldn’t go through with it themselves. But many of them didn’t hold back from taking part; taking it in turns to chop and shave Karen’s hair.

“I’m really inspired by the work that this charity undertakes” she said “it has become a cause very close to my heart over the years. I hope that my shaved head will attract attention and hopefully enable me to raise even more money.”
