Applications are invited from individuals who can make a substantial contribution to the work of the University’s Board of Governors as independent members.
About the Board
Glyndŵr University strives to be a market led, student centred university of international significance open to all. It has a vision to become indispensable as a significant, relevant and expert partner in regional and national economic and social development.
The University’s Board of Governors has collective responsibility for determining the University’s educational character, for enabling the University to achieve and develop its mission and primary objectives of learning, teaching and research, ensuring the solvency of the University and safeguarding its assets.
The Board of Governors, which has a majority of independent members, includes the Vice-Chancellor (Chief Executive) and staff and student representatives.
It is entrusted with both public and private funds and its members have a particular duty to observe high standards of governance. This includes ensuring and demonstrating integrity and objectivity in the transaction of the Board’s business and wherever possible following a policy of openness and transparency.
The time commitment equates to approximately 30 – 50 hours annually which includes four Board meetings, one ‘away’ day and a number of development workshops as required. Members are also expected to serve on at least one committee of the Board which would meet between two and five times per year, although consideration can be given to the time commitment that members nominated for membership can personally give.
The term of office is for three years with the possibility for this to be renewed for a second term.
The University is committed to the promotion of equality and diversity and widening access and participation in higher education and encourages applications in the fulfilment of this commitment. In particular it welcomes applications from persons with a disability, those from ethnic minorities and from women, who it is recognised are currently under-represented on the Board of Governors.
Skills, knowledge and experience
The Nominations Committee, which is responsible for recommending Independent members to the Board, considers a range of skills, knowledge and experience to ensure there is a balance across the Board as a whole. Members are expected to make their knowledge and expertise available to the Board of Governors and provide advice and guidance to the Board and to the University on a wide range of matters.
Independent members need to bring particular behaviours to the Board of Governors and play an appropriate part in ensuring the necessary business of the Board of Governors is carried out efficiently, effectively and in manner appropriate for the proper conduct of public business. Members should question intelligently, debate constructively, challenge rigorously and listen sensitively to the views of others inside and outside meetings of the Board of Governors.
The Nominations Committee welcomes applications from persons with skills, knowledge and experience in a range of areas with a particular interest in and commitment to higher education and the economic, political and social environment in which it operates. However the Board is seeking persons in particular at the current time with skills, knowledge or experience in the areas of estates/facilities management, law/legal, research and partnership/ collaboration.
The position of independent governor is not remunerated, however travel and other necessary and reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
